A clock can only measures the oscillations of it's mechanism, be that a pendulum or an atom.Presumably 'gravitational' time dilation is caused by gravity acting on the mechanism. What acts on the mechanism to cause 'kinetic' time dilation?

If an observer who is stationary with respect to a black hole observes an object slowing to a standstill as falls toward the event horizon, is the apparent time dilation due to the object’s velocity or to the gravitational field of the black hole?

Is time dilation the same as length contraction in some sense? I've seen the 'muon reaching earth's surface problem' explained in terms of both time dilation and length contraction and now I'm confused as to whether they are the same thing?

In relativity, if spacetime is viewed as a concretely existing entity rather than just geometry, why can't it be seen as at absolute rest? I don't understand why time dilation isn't asymmetrical if motion is ultimately non-relative.
