The element with an atomic number lower than its corresponding transition metal is called a "lanthanide." Lanthanides are a series of elements in the periodic table that have atomic numbers ranging from 57 to 71, immediately following the element barium (atomic number 56). The corresponding transition metal for the lanthanides is usually found in the d-block of the periodic table.
