The atomic number of an atom tells you the number of protons in the nucleus of that atom. It is a unique identifier for each element on the periodic table. The atomic number determines the chemical properties of an element and distinguishes it from other elements. In a neutral atom, the number of protons is equal to the number of electrons, so the atomic number also gives you the number of electrons in a neutral atom.
