Elements with the same number of protons but differing numbers of neutrons are known as isotopes. Isotopes of an element have the same atomic number (which is equal to the number of protons) but different mass numbers (which is the sum of protons and neutrons in the nucleus). The isotopes of an element exhibit similar chemical properties but may have different physical properties, such as atomic mass and radioactivity.
