To determine the molarity of an unknown solution when you know its formula and molality (bulk concentration), you need additional information such as the density of the solution or the volume of the solvent. With the formula and molality alone, it is not possible to directly calculate the molarity.
Molarity (M) is defined as the number of moles of solute per liter of solution. It is calculated using the following formula:
Molarity (M) = (molality × density) / (molar mass × (1 - (density / ρ)))
Where:
- Molality (m) is the amount of solute (in moles) per kilogram of solvent.
- Density is the density of the solution.
- Molar mass is the molar mass of the solute.
- ρ is the density of the solvent.
Without the density or volume information, it is not possible to calculate the molarity.
