The name "photon" for the quantum of light was proposed by the American physicist Gilbert N. Lewis in 1926. He introduced the term "photon" to describe the discrete packets or quanta of electromagnetic radiation, which we now understand as individual particles of light. Lewis's proposal played a crucial role in the development of quantum mechanics and the understanding of the dual nature of light as both particles (photons) and waves (electromagnetic radiation).
