The NO3- (nitrate) molecule has a covalent bond between the nitrogen (N) atom and the three oxygen (O) atoms. However, when nitrate forms an ionic compound by combining with a metal or a positively charged ion, such as sodium (Na+), the bond between NO3- and the cation becomes ionic. In this case, the overall compound is held together by ionic bonds.
