It is generally not recommended to put your car into neutral when coming to a stop unless you are using a manual transmission and you want to coast to a stop. For vehicles with automatic transmissions, it is safer to keep the car in Drive (or the appropriate gear) until you have fully stopped. Shifting into neutral while still in motion can reduce your control over the vehicle and may hinder your ability to respond to sudden situations.
When you approach a stop, it is best to decelerate gradually by easing off the accelerator and applying the brakes smoothly. Allow the transmission to downshift automatically as you slow down. When the vehicle has come to a complete stop, you can then shift into Park (for automatic transmissions) or engage the clutch and shift into neutral (for manual transmissions) if desired.
