Max Planck played a pivotal role in the development of quantum theory and is often regarded as its founder. His work on the quantization of energy in black-body radiation led to the formulation of the concept of energy quanta, which laid the foundation for quantum mechanics.

Planck initially introduced the concept of energy quanta as a mathematical trick to explain the experimental data on black-body radiation. However, he himself struggled to fully accept the profound implications of his own theory. Planck was deeply rooted in classical physics and held a strong belief in deterministic, continuous processes.

In his own words, Planck once stated, "As a man who has devoted his whole life to the most clear-headed science, to the study of matter, I can tell you as a result of my research about atoms this much: There is no matter as such! All matter originates and exists only by virtue of a force which brings the particles of an atom to vibration and holds this most minute solar system of the atom together. We must assume behind this force the existence of a conscious and intelligent mind. This mind is the matrix of all matter."

Despite his reservations and philosophical leanings, Planck's work laid the groundwork for the subsequent development of quantum mechanics. His quantization hypothesis was later expanded upon by other scientists, such as Albert Einstein, Niels Bohr, Werner Heisenberg, and Erwin Schrödinger, who collectively established the principles and mathematical formalism of quantum theory.

While Planck may have had reservations about the philosophical implications of quantum theory, his contributions to the field were groundbreaking and instrumental in revolutionizing our understanding of the microscopic world. His ideas served as the starting point for a new era in physics, challenging classical notions and paving the way for the development of one of the most successful and widely tested theories in science.
