The region of an atom that has the least mass is the electron cloud or the electron shell. Electrons are extremely light particles compared to protons and neutrons, which are located in the atomic nucleus. The mass of an electron is approximately 1/1836th of the mass of a proton or neutron. As a result, the total mass of electrons in an atom is significantly smaller than the combined mass of the protons and neutrons in the nucleus.
