The isotope chosen as the reference isotope for atomic mass units is carbon-12. One atomic mass unit (amu) is defined as 1/12th the mass of a carbon-12 atom. This choice was made because carbon-12 is relatively abundant and has a mass close to the whole number of 12. The reference isotope provides a consistent baseline for comparing the masses of other atoms and isotopes.
