Time dilation is a phenomenon predicted by the theory of relativity, both special relativity and general relativity. It refers to the slowing down or speeding up of time as experienced by two observers in different relative motion or in the presence of gravitational fields.

In special relativity, time dilation occurs due to differences in relative velocity. According to the theory, as an object's velocity approaches the speed of light, time slows down for that object relative to a stationary observer. In general relativity, time dilation arises due to the presence of gravitational fields. Gravity curves spacetime, causing it to be distorted. One real-life example where time dilation is experienced is in the context of the Global Positioning System (GPS). GPS satellites orbit the Earth at high speeds relative to observers on the ground. Due to the velocity-dependent time dilation of special relativity, the clocks on board the satellites tick slightly faster than identical clocks on the Earth's surface. To ensure accurate positioning information, the GPS system has to account for this time dilation effect in its calculations.

These experimental verifications, along with the successful predictions of the theory of relativity in numerous other scenarios, provide strong evidence for the reality of time dilation. Time dilation is an essential aspect of our understanding of the nature of time and has been thoroughly validated through both theoretical predictions and experimental measurements.
