Helium atoms that have lost two electrons are called helium ions or helium cations. When an atom loses electrons, it becomes positively charged because the number of protons in the nucleus is greater than the number of electrons. In the case of helium, which normally has two electrons, losing two electrons would result in a helium ion with a charge of +2.
