The mantis shrimp is known to have one of the broadest ranges of color vision among animals. While humans have three types of color receptors (red, green, and blue), mantis shrimp possess up to sixteen different types of photoreceptor cells. These receptors enable them to perceive a wider spectrum of light, including ultraviolet and polarized light. This exceptional visual system helps them detect a wide range of colors and interpret various visual cues in their environment.
